Single Review: Evil Nine – Icicles (feat. Seraphim) (Marine Parade)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 27 April 2009
After four years of waiting, Evil Nine finally return to bring us their sophomore release, ‘They Live’, and with it comes a flurry of new singles. This third single, set to be their biggest to date, is ‘Icicles’, an upbeat pop-electro crossover that brings with it an indie cool in the vein of TV On The Radio or Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The real weight behind this track lies in Seraphim’s edgy vocal track that reins in the influences, in part sounding like Tunde Adebimpe of the previously mentioned TV On The Radio; alternating between this and a slow drawling rap, Seraphim makes the song his own by creating a delightful contrast between the rawer verses and the powerful, uplifting choruses. Complementing this single are a number of remixes that further explore the track’s themes, the Adam Freeland mix being a particularly brilliant one. SJS
