Fabric cancels this weekend’s events following recent drug-related deaths

London club Fabric has cancelled this weekend’s programme following the drug-related deaths of two teenagers at the venue in recent weeks.
In a statement of its website, the club said: “For the past two years Fabric has operated without incident, but tragically in the past nine weeks two eighteen-year-old boys have died as a consequence of drug overdoses. In order to understand how this has happened we have agreed with the police and other agencies to suspend our operation while we investigate. The club will therefore be closed this weekend”.
The first of the two incidents took place on 25 Jun when a clubber fell ill at the venue and later died. The second occurred last weekend when an eighteen year old male collapsed outside Fabric’s London base and was pronounced dead shortly after.
As previously reported, Fabric faced the prospect of losing its licence after its local authority launched a review of its operations in 2014 following complaints from police regarding drug-related incidents. In order to avoid that, the club agreed to a number of strict new security measures including sniffer dogs and ID scans. Though at the same time it appealed the council’s ruling on its licence. That appeal was successful meaning the new measures were never fully implemented.
At the time of the club’s fallout with Islington Council, police admitted that – despite making a complaint about Fabric – they actually had a good relationship with the venue. Meanwhile management there said that: “Fabric has always operated a zero tolerance drugs policy and we’re proud to continue to be open and honest in assisting the police with any incident investigations”.
Yesterday, the club said that it would make a further statement on the recent incidents and upcoming events next week, while adding “in the meantime for anyone who has purchased a ticket for the club this weekend, we have instructed Resident Advisor to refund all ticket purchases”.
