Single Review: Fabrice Lig – Digital Forest (R&S Recordings)

Fabrice Lig

I have been an avid follower of Fabrice Lig since I came across his superb melodic techno-with-soul track ‘Walking On A Cloud’ – released on F Com nearly a decade ago under his Soul Designer moniker. This Belgian ex school teacher has since toured around the globe with his lush blend of tech and has gained a strong following. Here he records for the resurrected R&S Recordings – a seminal label back in the day.

‘Digital Forest’ is a tad harder than previous offerings. It bumps along with pace, featuring tight programming and a smattering of intricate bleeps. It’s not instantly accessible but is definitely a grower. It may not be Lig’s best track but it’s certainly good enough to nestle amongst his impressive catalogue.

The remix on the b-side is quite impressive. Put together by up and comer Space Dimension Controller, a 20 year old Ulsterman known as Jack Hamill, apparently influenced by Juan Atkins, Aphex Twin and Drexciya, he mixes it up in a less formulaic techno style, with a pinch of tribal soul and even a few little funky bits and bobs in there. With some cool melodic keys, it then becomes even pacier. SDC could be one to watch and steals some of Lig’s thunder with his rework. Worth checking if quality future techy grooves are your bag. PV
