Single Review: Fan Death – Veronica’s Veil (Phantasy)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 8 December 2008
Whilst the current trend of electro-pop is harking back towards the disco era with a hint of nostalgia, the cheesy seventies funk-cop TV show intro on this single leaves no doubt whatsoever as to what Fan Death are squarely aiming for. Theirs is a world where disco balls are as coveted as candelabras, and a floor isn’t a floor unless it changes colour with the beat. Descending violin loops and piano stomps that wouldn’t sound out of place in a power ballad give way to seductive vocals that sound just that little bit more genuine. However, despite garnering respect by sticking to an unbastardised formula, they do leave you wondering what the point of it all may be. The new kids have got their nu darlings and the old guard will be hard pressed to tempt away from their retro heroes, but kudos for trying. ME
