Album Review: Fischerspooner – Entertainment (Lo Recordings)

Fischerspooner

Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner cast a considerable shadow, one that extends from their New York studio eastward across the Atlantic, over continental Europe and beyond. After receiving significant acclaim off the back of their 2001 album ‘#1’, they went onto to further their achievements with the follow up, 2005’s ‘Odyssey’. One might expect, given the lack of a difficult second album, that ‘Entertainment’ would rise above its antecedents and reach the heights that Fischerspooner have previously shown themselves worthy of. Unfortunately not. ‘Entertainment’ stumbles where it should lift off; the ideas are stagnant and unoriginal, where once Fischerspooner innovated, now they appear as a parody, sounding like a particular cultural zeitgeist five or six years ago. Noteworthy songs include the previously released ‘Danse En France’, which although good seems to appease the Kitsuné audience, or at least those particularly affected by The Teenagers or Justice, two artists who have been so successful since Fischerspooner’s last outing. Equally ‘Amuse Bouche’ conveys a similar feeling, and again, it is good songwriting, but lacks that innovative quality that has always been so prominent in Fischerspooner’s previous work. SJS
