Flea responds to Super Bowl miming chatter
By Chris Cooke | Published on Wednesday 5 February 2014
Red Hot Chilli Peppers man Flea has responded to online bantering about his and bandmate Josh Klinghoffer’s guitars being very obviously unplugged during their bit of the Super Bowl halftime show this weekend just gone, where they played alongside that Bruno Mars dude.
And no Axl Rose, he didn’t have a microchip in his ass picking up his bass notes. They were miming the music bit to a recording made earlier in the day, because, even though RHCP never mime ever, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where live geetars were a no, no.
Writes Flea: “When we were asked by the NFL and Bruno to play our song ‘Give It Away’ at the Super Bowl, it was made clear to us that the vocals would be live, but the bass, drums, and guitar would be pre-recorded. I understand the NFL’s stance on this, given they only have a few minutes to set up the stage, there a zillion things that could go wrong and ruin the sound for the folks watching in the stadium and the TV viewers. There was not any room for argument on this, the NFL does not want to risk their show being botched by bad sound, period”.
Flea and Klinghoffer left their guitars unplugged because they’d rather the world know they weren’t playing live, than pretending that they were. So, there you go. Consider the matter closed.
