Single Review: Gomez – Airstream Driver (Eat Sleep Records)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 20 April 2009
1998 Mercury Music Award winners Gomez return once again with the single ‘Airstream Driver’ from the new Album ‘A New Tide’. 11 years after the win, which underlined the band’s originality, distinctive vocal styling, indie rhythms and Delta blues beats coloured by layers of percussion, longterm fans of the band will be glad to hear that not much has changed; but for those of you who weren’t that keen on them in the first place, don’t expect to be suddenly converted. If you’re looking for a song with poetic lyrics to stir the philosopher or dreamer within us, this is not the one to do it so don’t prepare yourselves to be blown away. However, the song encompasses some of the traits which made the band quite popular towards the end of the 90s; the quirky percussion mixed in with coarse rock guitars giving it the old Gomez folk feel. This is the formula which has seemed to keep them on the straight and narrow. However, considering they beat The Verve’s ‘Urban Hymns’ and Pulp’s ‘This Is Hardcore’ to the aforementioned award, it’s a pity they haven’t managed to convince many more people they were worthy of this and this track doesn’t help to make their case. Nevertheless, a dependable song from a dependable band. SD
