The Great Escape

As you read this, The Great Escape is getting underway in Brighton for another year, with 3000 music industry professionals in the city to check out some of the 400 great new bands playing, and to listen, learn, discuss and debate with over 150 innovators and experts who appearing on stage as part of the CMU Insights-programmed TGE Convention this year.

There are two insight-strands as part of the convention today, the first – Building A Fan Business – looking at how artists and their business partners can and should capitalise on the direct-to-fan relationship, which now drives the business. Fan engagement, marketing and data experts will all contribute, before a closing debate on just how record labels fit into the fan-centric music industry. As a taster, check this interview with one of the speakers, Adam Biddle from theAudience.

Kicking off at 2pm, Maximising Music Rights will throw the spotlight on all the key issues in the music rights domain, with a focus on artists, labels and publishers can get the most from their content. Neighbouring rights will be debated, the takedown issuing processes that have become to norm in the music rights sector will be explained, and David Cameron’s IP Advisor Mike Weatherley will be interviewed. Plus reps from strand supporters PRS For Music and PPL will be on hand too. Check out our interview with one of the speakers in this one, Ann Tausis, here.

In addition to that lot, the Great Escape conversations programme kicks off at 1.45pm with an exciting session looking at the role pirate radio has had in shaping music and media cultures in the UK, with Kiss founder Gordon Mac plus former pirate radio people Daniel Nathan, now chief of totallyradio.com and Chairman of Juice 107.2, Stephen Taverner, now with East City Management, and Uncle Dugs from Rinse FM. Delegate passes for this year’s TGE have now sold out, though tickets are still available for the Saturday strands Blueprint and DIY. Look out for CMU’s coverage of all things TGE here.
