HMV to downsize flagship Glasgow store
By Andy Malt | Published on Thursday 8 May 2014
HMV’s Scottish flagship store in Glasgow is to close and relocate to an as-yet-unannounced smaller site.
Announcing the news via Twitter, a spokesperson for the Buchanan Street shop said: “Sad news to announce for all our customers and staff: our store is closing. Good news: we are relocating in the future, more info soon”.
The exact date of closure and new site have not yet been confirmed – though the store has confirmed on its Twitter feed that it is hoping to move into the nearby Buchanan Galleries shopping centre and that the new location will be smaller. This follows the move of HMV’s flagship store on Oxford Street in London to its original, smaller site last year.
HMV was, of course, bought by Hilco just over a year ago. A number of other stores have already been closed where the company was unable to negotiate lower rents (in some cases, it has been claimed, Hilco was demanding to pay no rent at all).
