Live Review: Ian Shaw and Juliet Roberts at London Jazz Festival on 12 Nov

Ian Shaw

This night was hosted by singer, pianist and raconteur Ian Shaw, who entertained the audience for no less than four hours with the help of a backing band and his two special guests: Juliet Roberts and Ronnie Scott’s resident Wednesday night trumpeter Andy Davies.

Shaw was completely confident in the intimate surroundings of the 606 Club and the crowd immediately warmed to his jokes and stories, even though he’d often start them part way through a number. That said, these frequent interruptions did eventually begin to detract slightly from the music being played, as if that was just there as light entertainment between the jokes.

And I didn’t feel either Roberts or Davies were given enough of the limelight, which is a shame because they both demonstrated much talent when they did become the focus, notably Juliet Roberts on ‘Natural Woman’ and Andy Davies on ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’. So, while undeniably a fun night, a better balance between the host’s banter and the guest’s playing would have been appreciated.
