Programme Manager, Interim Role – seven month contract to March 2020

Union Chapel Project (UCP) is an independent charity. The project is an outstanding example of the way in which new uses for an historic Grade 1 Listed building can be achieved without compromising its original function, as a Church.

UCP was established in 1992, a decade after a local campaign successfully prevented the building from demolition. UCP was tasked with coordinating the vital conservation works for this important local landmark by opening the building up as a multi-activity hub from which revenues were generated. The building is now a vibrant place, hosting a range of activities including concerts, lectures, rehearsals and the production of our own in-house arts culture and community events. The building is also home to The Margins Project – a charitable subsidiary which provides vital support to people facing homelessness and isolation.

The Programme Manager is a key member of UCD’s Events Team. This role will require a professional and motivated individual who will work in a team environment to deliver a strong and culturally diverse programme in line with the aims and visions of Union Chapel. You will liaise with promoters, managers, agents, artists, and organisers across a mixed genre of events to showcase Union Chapel both nationally and internationally. Strong administration skills and the ability to build relationships will be integral to this role. 

Programme Management

• Maintain and develop the ongoing relationships with all promoters, agents, managers and venue hire clients, ensuring all enquiries are dealt with promptly and effectively
• Operate and creatively control the Programme Diary for Union Chapel, in line with the visions and aims of Union Chapel
• Manage and work to maximise the UCD events budget set for the Union Chapel venue hire and space hire for the financial period year ending March 2020
• To work with Union Chapel Church on diary dates for non-commercial events for the church programme
• Work closely with the Marketing Manager, review all ticket sales numbers and keep regular dialogue with all promoters on events across the diary
• Liaise with the Bar Manager and Margins Chef on upcoming confirmed events to assist them in commercial budget planning
• Attend UCD Board meeting and prepare departmental activity reports

Space hire

• Support the Programme and Venue Hire Co-Ordinator in the development of the Space Hire business for Union Chapel, namely the Sunday school hall, lower hall and upper hall bar
• Actively review occupancy and availability levels for the Space Hire business, identifying periods that require resource and focus to sell available space and dates
• Work with the Production Manager and Technical Manager, identify promoter and Space Hire Organiser needs and ensure the Chapel is meeting all expectations as a world class venue


• Work with the Head of Finance & Operations to initiate and implement improvements for processes and procedures, including invoicing, credit control, event settlements and reporting
• Approve Chapel Venue Hire and Space Hire invoices as required
• Provide a regular monthly budget report for the Head of Finance and Operations along with all programme opportunities to date and all other relevant industry information
• Review and prepare a quarterly reforecast with the Head of Finance and Operations and the CEO

Staff management

• Direct, manage and support your departmental staff to ensure the effective performance of their role including undertaking annual staff appraisal and training
• Support and develop the Programme and Venue Hire Co-Ordinator and ensure they are meeting all and any objectives set

Facilities management

• Act as a key-holder for the building, and in conjunction with the Facilities Manager be responsible when necessary for opening and locking the building as required.
• Be fully conversant with emergency and evacuation procedures and support evacuations of the building: liaise with the fire brigade and / or police in the event of an emergency
• Undertaking any other duties that may reasonably be required by the CEO and Directors of Union Chapel Directions Ltd and Union Chapel Project

Person Specification


• Proven experience of successfully managing and developing a creative programme of events within a venue in an event or theatre environment.
• Minimum three years’ experience in a similar role
• Awareness of Health and Safety practise within a venue setting
• Excellent standard of both written and spoken English with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people in a confident, professional and friendly manner


• Working knowledge of venue booking systems and financial spreadsheets to be up to date with standard processes
• Experience working with promoters, tour managers and bands
• Experience working with a community lead organisation
• Personal Licence and First Aider
• Experience of using a venue management software such as Artifax or Yesplan
