John Legend denies plagiarism claim
By CMU Editorial | Published on Friday 22 July 2011
John Legend is the latest artist to be accused of nicking a song off an unsigned singer-songwriter, though he’s denying the allegations full on.
One Anthony Stokes claims he gave Legend a copy of his song ‘Where Are You Now?’ on a demo tape after a concert in 2004. Two years later, he goes on to allege, Legend released ‘Maxine’s Interlude’, which the claimant says is based on his song.
But Legend says the allegations are untrue and he’s ready to fight the lawsuit in court. He told E!: “This gentleman made an accusation that’s not true and we know it’s not true. I never heard of his song until he sued me. I would never steal anyone’s song. I’ve never, ever done that before. Never even been accused of it before, and we will fight it in court and we will prevail. I’m not worried about it. I know the truth is on my side”.
