Kendrick Lamar sued over ‘The Blacker The Berry’ photo
By Chris Cooke | Published on Tuesday 14 July 2015
Kendrick Lamar and friends – well, business partners – have been sued by a photographer who claims they used one of his pictures without permission for the single release of the rapper’s track ‘The Blacker The Berry’.
The second single from Lamar’s third album ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ featured a photo of a women breastfeeding two children. Freelance photographer Giordano Cipriani says he took the picture on a trip to Africa in 2011, and that he never gave Lamar, his label Top Dawg Entertainment or their affiliates at Universal Music permission to use it.
According to the website Bossip, in a lawsuit filed last week Cipriani is seeking an injunction to stop Lamar’s future use of the image, plus $150,000 in damages for each time the image was used without licence.
Neither the rapper nor his label have as yet commented on the litigation.
