Labour appoints new culture spokesperson following top team rejig

The Labour Party has made Maria Eagle its Shadow Culture Secretary following a top team rejig that saw party leader Jeremy Corbyn fire his existing culture spokesperson, Michael Dugher, who only took on the role last September.

It’s thought that Dugher was axed from Corbyn’s shadow cabinet because he had been too critical of the party’s leader who, of course, was a controversial choice for the leadership in various circles, and not least among more centrist Labour MPs like Dugher.

Eagle moves into the culture role from the shadow defence brief, which is technically a demotion caused by her difference of opinion with Corbyn over nuclear weapons. Though Eagle said she was “pleased” with her new appointment, identifying press regulation and the ongoing review of the BBC as key areas of interest.
