Lennon celebrated
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 11 October 2010
John Lennon’s first wife Cynthia and the couple’s son Julian unveiled a slightly crazy monument in Liverpool this weekend to commemorate what would have been the late Beatle’s 70th birthday. It was one of several events around the world to celebrate Lennon’s birthday.
Speaking at the unveiling, Cynthia, who was married to Lennon for much of the sixties, told reporters: “I think the mourning is over for John. I think it’s time to celebrate, which is what we’re doing”.
Julian added: “I think most things have been said. We come here with our hearts to honour dad and to pray for peace and say thank you to each and everyone of you and everyone involved in the celebrations today”.
Yoko Ono, meanwhile, was in Reykjavik, where she took part in a short ceremony at the Lennon-tributising Imagine Peace Tower, just outside the Icelandic capital, before attending the premiere screening of a new documentary about the creation and building of the ‘tower’ (it’s actually a series of lights) itself. Lennon’s widow then performed at a tribute concert where Ringo Starr joined her on stage to sing ‘Give Peace A Chance’.
Ono commented: “John came from humble beginnings and did not enjoy a privileged early life, but he went on to change our world with songs and ideas. They resonate even more today than when he first gave them to us”.
Meanwhile, on the crazy internet, Google paid tribute to Lennon via a collaboration with Ono and EMI (the latter keen to flog the late singer’s re-mastered solo albums) with some special videos on YouTube and a special, moving, ‘Imagine’ soundtracked, Google doodle on the web firm’s main search engine page.
