Mariah splits from manager Jermaine Dupri

Mariah Carey, aka Mimi, has emancipated herself from another manager (or vice versa, as the case may be), in this instance long-time collaborator Jermaine Dupri. Breaking the news earlier this week, Billboard claims to have learned that Carey has reconvened and is now working “closely” – if not officially – with Kevin Liles, who held the premiership of Def Jam at the time she was signed to the label.

Still, it appears Dupri and Carey’s split is amicable(ish) at least, with Dupri stating via Billboard: “I put my all into every project. But when I’m not allowed to do what I do, then I know it’s time for me to move on. Mariah and I enjoy working together and will continue to make great music together in the future”.

Dupri is only the latest in a conveyor belt of Mariah Carey managers to “move on” from the position, following in the wake of Randy Jackson and Irving Azoff, and Bruce Eskowitz (all those in 2013 alone); and, over the past ten years, Benny Medina, the late Chris Lighty, Randy Hoffman and Sandy Gallin.

This latest management shift may or may not have a tiny bit to do with the disappointingly flat international sales of Mariah’s latest LP-that-I-shall-not-name, which has shifted 103,000 units since its release back in late-May. I’m going to take a wild stab in the dark and say that it probably does.
