MIDEM notes positive outlook, announces 2015 dates

MIDEM

Google and YouTube may have got more than their fair share of heckles, but bosses at MIDEM rapped up last weekend’s Cannes bash by insisting that there was a positive mood at this year’s event.

Attendance at MIDEM itself was down again, to 6150 delegates (from 6400 last year), but there was still plenty of business being done, and the event’s management reckon that, with the recorded music sector returning to (slight) growth in some territories, speakers and delegates were generally more upbeat about life. Well, working life.

MIDEM Director Bruno Crolot said: “These are early days, and the music industry is still seriously challenged, but for the first time since 2002, we have people talking of a return to growth and asking themselves how they can make it sustainable. We have done our utmost to make MIDEM a platform for this debate by making sustainable growth the central theme of all we have done this year and by providing the MIDEM community with a full tool kit for business success. The feedback I have had from clients is that MIDEM 2014 was totally business-focused”.

And putting an end to admittedly dubious rumours that MIDEM would be closing its doors after this year (gossip presumably started during a very brief lapse of all that smiley positivity), the conference also yesterday announced its dates for 2015. So, you can put 31 Jan to 3 Feb in your diaries now.
