Ladytron

Ladytron was formed by producers Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu with singers Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo in 1999. Since then, their cold electronic sound – a blend of electro-pop and krautrock – showcased over four albums on tracks such as ‘Seventeen’ and ‘Destroy Everything You Touch’, has won them many fans the world over. One such enthusiast turned out to be Christina Aguilera, who invited the band to work on a number of songs with her in 2009, two of which were released as bonus tracks on her ‘Bionic’ album.

The band are currently completing work on their fifth album, ‘Gravity The Seducer’, which is due for release later this year. But before that, they have collected together their best work for a new compilation, ‘Best Of 00-10’, which pulls together tracks from all of their albums, plus a new one entitled ‘Ace Of Hz’.

Ahead of the release of the compilation on 28 Mar, we asked Mira Aroyo and Reuben Wu to pick five tracks each to create a Powers Of Ten playlist. Handing over their choices, Mira said: “Here is a selection of music we love. Some of them are longtime favourites, some are tracks we’ve recently discovered and some we’ve been playing out frequently on the dancefloor when we DJ. Hope you enjoy them as much as we do”.

01 Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Round And Round
Mira: It’s a great pop song and reminds me of the summer and BBQs, so it kind of warms me up this time of year.

02 The Offkey Hat – Emergency Calling
Reuben: I don’t know anything about this band but it was playing in a bar in east London and I Shazam’d it. Nice clubby mid-tempo electronica.

03 Stevie Wonder – Golden Lady
Mira: The bridge going into the chorus of this song makes my hairs stand on end.

04 The Obernkirchen Children’s Choir – The Happy Wanderer
Reuben: This is a one-hit wonder from a German children’s choir in 1953. They were all war orphans. A very uplifting and jolly song.

05 Bot’Ox – Bearded Lady Motorcycle Club
Mira: I love the riff and groove of this track. It’s fun to play out when DJing and makes me think of Neu! who I’m a big fan of.

06 Carte Blanche – Gare Du Nord
Reuben: An electro/techno track from 2010 – sounds like an updated ‘Nervous Acid’ by Bobby Konders, a classic acid track from the 80s. Lots of groove where it needs it without sounding like a broken hoover.

07 Dungen – Marken Lag Stilla
Mira: I really like the sound of this track and the vibe. Really 70s.

08 Soft Moon – Breathe the Fire
Reuben: Just been listening to this album – they’re from San Francisco. They do the Bauhaus/Joy Division thing very well without it sounding pastiche.

09 Robert Wyatt – Shipbuilding
Mira: Robert Wyatt is one of my favourite musicians. His voice is totally otherworldly and I can never tire of it, his haunting fragile production and interesting chord changes.

10 Sonoio – Houdini
Reuben: ‘Houdini’ from Sonoio, our friend Alessandro Cortini’s new project, featuring his droning analogue modular synths, which appear on some of our music. I recently finished a remix of this great song which is available now on free download. A very beautiful and distinctive track.
