Single Review: Nigel Of Bermondsey – This Is How It Feels (Universal)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 15 June 2009
Nigel describes his more acoustic minded take on Inspiral Carpet’s dance-pop anthem for the isolated as ‘urban folk’. I see it as pointless and pained, though so close to pleasing. The new stripped down guitar work and strings are nice certainly, but any poignancy in the often dark lyrics is lost with Nigel’s high-pitched, grating vocals constantly running too fast and jarring with the gentle acoustics of an intimate musical performance. Some might say his tones are ethereal, but they’re closer to pinky and perky, offering little sentiment, and no sincerity to the classic work. The original b-side, ‘Something’s On Fire’ again showcases such flat vocals that even Amanda Holden would have to buzz out after mere seconds. Pleasing arrangements, but reduced to tedious apathy with an amateur vocal performance. TM
