Single Review: O.Children – Ruins (Deadly People)

O Children

Whereas O.Children’s impossibly magical debut single ‘Dead Disco Dancer’ was all new wavey (but in a dark, Bad Seeds kind of way), the suitably-grandiosely titled ‘Ruins’ heads marginally further into the 1980s.

With its pummelling guitars, glistening synths and big chorus, there’s more than a touch of mid 80s stadium goth about it (think The Cult, Sisters of Mercy, or even The Chameleons). Expect lots of dry ice and pained faces in the video, along with haircuts that will frighten small children. Talking of which, I’ve neglected to mention the most captivating thing about O.Children – 6 foot 8 frontman Tobi O’Kandi’s astonishingly dramatic voice, which is so low you almost wonder if you’re playing the song at 33 not 45 rpm, even though it’s a CD.

This is all rather fine indeed, and bodes very well for their imminent debut album. MS
