Ole acquires Sony Pictures publishing catalogue
By Chris Cooke | Published on Wednesday 3 July 2013
Toronto-based independent music publisher Ole has acquired the recent songs catalogue of Sony Pictures Entertainment, covering music created for TV and film releases between 1993 and 2012.
Billboard reckons the deal is worth up to $150 million. The catalogue includes music from shows like ‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Dawson’s Creek’ and ‘Wheel Of Fortune’, and movies including ‘Groundhog Day’, ‘Stuart Little’ and ‘The Da Vinci Code’.
Confirming the deal, Ole boss Robert Ott said: “This is a transformative deal for Ole. This deal will double our NPS [net publisher share] to about $35 million annually, which puts us in the upper mid-tier of the music publishing companies out there”.
Ole will seek sync opportunities for the acquired catalogue, as well as liaising with Sony Pictures itself on any potential new distribution routes for the programmes and films from which the music originates, which would also benefit the publisher. It is thought that the Sony publishing company, Sony/ATV, which has an administrator role on the Sony Picture songs catalogue, will continue to be involved on that side.
