First Aid Kit

Sisterly duo Johanna and Klara Söderberg first emerged as First Aid Kit in 2008 with their debut EP ‘Drunken Trees’. Their career was then accelerated somewhat when a YouTube cover of Fleet Foxes’ ‘Tiger Mountain Peasant Song’ gained popularity and resulted in them performing the song live with the band.

The duo’s subsequent debut album ‘The Big Black And The Blue’ was well received critically, but it was with this year’s ‘The Lion’s Roar’ that they really took off, going top 40 in the UK and reaching number one in their native Sweden. Having now sold over 200,000 copies, the title track of the album is released as a single this week and the pair kick off a sold out UK tour with a show at Shepherds Bush Empire in London tonight.

Ahead of all that, we asked Johanna and Klara to put together a playlist for us.

Click here to listen to the duo’s playlist on Spotify, and read on to find out more about their choices:

01 Father John Misty – Nancy From Now On
Father John Misty aka Josh Tillman’s new album is probably our favourite so far this year. Every single song is amazing. His voice is so freaking good and his stage moves are killer. We hope we can collaborate with him some day.

02 Bat For Lashes – Laura
We really want to write a piano ballad for our next album and this song has been a big inspiration so far. It’s perfect.

03 Jesca Hoop – When I’m Asleep
Jesca Hoop came to one of our shows in Manchester a couple of years ago and gave us her album ‘Hunting My Dress’. We fell in love with her spooky, witchy folk music and her latest album is beautiful.

04 Leonard Cohen – Show Me The Place
We’ve been obsessed with Leonard Cohen for quite a long time. This song is almost spoken word, but has so much emotions, it’s almost like a prayer or meditative tune. Very calming and relaxing, but gloomy at the same time.

05 Laura Gibson – La Grande
Laura opened for us recently at one of our shows in Seattle and we were totally blown away by her music. Her latest album is highly recommended. This song has a dark campfire-tribal vibe to it that we dig.

06 Jack White – Blunderbuss
What is there to say about Jack White that hasn’t been said? We’re honoured that we got to work and tour with this man, and continue to be astounded by his consistently timeless and classic work.

07 Kathleen Edwards – Chameleon/Comedian
This was the first song we heard from Kathleen Edwards and it’s a gem. We love the production of this song. The lyrics are unusual and clever, talking about how a comedian can be very unfunny when he or she is off-stage.

08 Dylan LeBlanc – Brother
Dylan opened for us on our US tour in September and his latest album is great. He is a sweetheart and an amazing songwriter with an ability to write songs that really get stuck in your head.

09 Cat Power – Ruin
We were quite surprised by how different Cat Power’s new album was to her last, but we love it to bits. It’s so rhythmic and cool.

10 Lana Del Rey – Ride
Say what you want about her authenticity and image, we love her deep voice and retro sound. We listened to this song a lot while driving through New Mexico, it was the perfect setting.
