Playlist: Flux Pavilion

Since he released his first single in 2009, Flux Pavilion, aka dubstep producer Josh Steele, has seen his career progress upwards at a constant rate. Already in demand for his live shows and DJ sets, he’s also been sampled by Kanye West and Jay-Z on their ‘Watch The Throne’ album, and last year gained his first UK top 40 single with the Example-featuring ‘Daydreamer’.

On 28 Jan he releases his new EP, ‘Blow The Roof’, through Warner Music, which features collaborations with Sway, P Money and Childish Gambino, amongst its eight new compositions.

Ahead of that, we asked him to show off a few of his influences and music favourites in a playlist. Of his ten chosen tracks, he says: “I listen to all sorts of stuff, really. I think a lot of it would be quite a surprise to most people. I tend to get stuck on albums and listen to them over and over rather than following new stuff”.

01 Julian Casablancas – Left And Right In The Dark
I’m a huge fan of The Strokes and Julian Casablancas’ solo album really spoke to me. It’s probably one of my most listened to albums. Reminds me of being on tour because I hammered it so much when it came out!

02 Turin Brakes – Rain City
This is one band that I’m constantly listening to, they made some amazing albums and always make me feel great. This track is one of my favourites, I was recently in the studio with them and they played it for me, it was like a dream moment.

03 Kill The Noise – Black Magic (Kill The Noise Part 2)
The musicality of this gets me every time, the chords and the flow are absolutely incredible, I take my hat off to him. It’s proof that inspired composition has a place within dance music.

04 Tired Arms – Blind Summit
I’m a big fan of ambient soundscapes and musical textures, and this is the first track of an EP that’s full of them. A great listen for reflection and relaxation for me, when I’m off the road this is what my house is filled with.

05 Vampire Weekend – Taxi Cab
This is a band that really surprised me, their use of electronics is really inspiring and creates a sound I haven’t really heard anywhere else. This track is such a beautiful mix of electronics and acoustics in a very subtle way.

06 Dillon Francis – Bootleg Fireworks
The amount of groove Dillon Francis can get out of a synth to me is incredible. This track is essentially just one sound playing one note, but it’s so expertly crafted that the groove on it is phenomenal. Major fan of Dillon Francis here.

07 Hudson Mohawke – Cbat
Well, it seems the whole world has gone crazy for ‘trap’, including myself. I have no idea what this track could/should be categorised as, but to me it embodies what I’m loving about the new wave of trap stuff. Attitude and groove.

08 Brown & Gammon – Blow My Mind
Signed to my label with Doctor P, Circus Records. This guy is a continuing source of surprise and experimentation with sound. What I love about BnG is that it’s different, I spend a lot of time listening to dance music but when I hear his tracks I always feel refreshed.

09 Flux Pavilion feat Childish Gambino – Do Or Die
I know it’s a bit weird choosing my own track, but if I didn’t like it I wouldn’t make it! This choice for me is more to show my love for Childish Gambino. I have loved his style since I first heard it and I’m so excited by what he did with this record. I love to listen to it!

10 Jay Z & Kanye West feat Frank Ocean and The-Dream – No Church In The Wild
Containing some of my all time favourite lyrics from Frank Ocean, this project was very important to me and the album has been a source of direction and inspiration within my own career. Hip hop has always played a part in my life and this record made me want to delve into that passion a little bit more.
