Soap&Skin

Austrian singer-songwriter Soap&Skin, aka Anja Plaschg, released her debut album, ‘Lovetune For Vacuum’, in 2009. Just nineteen when it came out, the album featured a mix of neo-classical and experimental sounds coupled with incredibly sharp, intimate songwriting.

She is due to release the follow-up, ‘Narrow’, on 19 Mar via PIAS. Picking up where the debut left off, it opens with ‘Vater’, a tribute, sung in German, to her late father, who died after the release of her first record, before slipping straight into a cover of ‘Voyage Voyage’ by 80s Euro-pop singer Desireless.

To promote ‘Narrow’, Plaschg has released a signature chocolate bar (the secret ingredient is pig’s blood), and will perform a headline show at The Scala in London on 11 Apr. Ahead of that, we asked her to compile a playlist for us.

01 Baby Dee – My Love Has Made A Fool Of Me
These lyrics! I’m in love with and thankful for the sublime Baby Dee. Her Album ‘The Robin’s Tiny Throat’ was giving me strength while working on ‘Narrow’.

02 Vincent Gallo – When
“I go away” by all means. This was my theme song for years.

03 Alan Vega – Daddy Died
Hideous and beautiful. Suicide for Jesus.

04 Pulp – This Is Hardcore
How serious and brave. One of the greatest songs in the world.

05 Smog – Our Anniversary
I always appreciate the cold soft bitterness of Smog.

06 Scott Walker – Always Coming Back To You
I’m always coming back to Scott Walker.

07 Claudine Longet – Let It Be Me
Makes me thrilled, aggressive and submissive at the same time. I’m imagining her holding the gun ready to shoot Vladimir Sabich.

08 Joy Division – Decades
Inimitable.

09 Death Grips – Guillotine
It’s so in-your-face. What a hymn.

10 Justin Timberlake – My Love
All American slime stiffs underneath those physical forcing synths, oh dog.
