Team Me

Originally the solo project of Marius Drogsås Hagen, indie-pop troupe Team Me began gaining attention in their native Norway when they found themselves in the finals of radio station NRK P3’s new band competition in 2010. From there they picked up acclaim from further afield with their eponymous debut EP, which was released in April last year, and well-received live shows all around Europe.

The band release their brilliant debut album, ‘To The Treetops’, via Propeller Recordings on 5 Mar, ahead of which we asked the band (then still a sextet, before the recent departure of multi-instrumentalist Synne Øverland Knudsen) to put together a playlist for us.

Explaining how their playlist was put together, the band said: “Here’s a collection of different songs that have influenced the six individuals of Team Me, and the reasons why they mean something to us. We’ve included personal comments relating to each track to give you a crash course in our diverse music taste. Hugs from Synne, Bjarne, Simen, the other Simen, Uno and Marius”.

01 Smashing Pumpkins – Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans
Uno: This song from ‘Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness’ defines my youth in general, and probably also marks the start of my curiosity in music. In recent times I have discovered this song again.

02 Beck – Debra
Uno: I completely fell in love with this song one morning some days ago when I was still drunk from the day before. Then ‘Midnite Vultures’ become one of my favourite records.

03 Wave Machines – Dead Houses
Synne: It’s amazing how you can come to think a song is about you – about people living in houses together, houses that are metaphorically dead – when the song was originally is about a specific street in Liverpool with just empty houses.

04 Final Fantasy – The Chronicles of Sarnia
Marius: Owen Pallett is truly one of the people I admire the most. This song is pure joy.

05 Mercury Rev – Opus 40
Marius: The first time I heard this song I had my head down a toilet… vomiting has never felt that good.

06 Fennesz – Black Sea
Simen Schikulski: This song makes me feel like I’m floating in outer space with no worries whatsoever, every single time I listen to it. The first time I heard this song I kept staring into thin air for about half an hour after the song was done.

07 Radiohead – Fog
Simen Skari: You know when you have to count to ten in order not to explode out of frustration because someone or something is pissing you off, or you are stressed or whatever? Well this is my count-to-ten-song. I get calmed down, sober, less stressed and a little bit happy whenever I listen to it.

08 Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody
Simen Skari: This is what I would take with me if I were stuck on an island and could only bring one thing. Except for a boat, I guess.

09 Of Montreal – A Sentence Of Sorts In Kongsvinger
[Picked by Bjarne who had nothing to say about this song!]

10 Elegi – Den Store Hvite Stillhet
Simen Schikulski: Elegi is one of Norway’s most underestimated musicians and artists. This is the sound of total isolation and depicts what it must feel like to freeze to death.
