Playlist: The Great Escape 2023 (Part 3)

The Great Escape festival continues today with hundreds of acts performing in venues all over the city.
We’ve picked out a handful of the artists we’re most excited to see and are sharing them with you here in the CMU Daily, along with a track to check out from each of them.

Marina Herlop – Miu
Using cut-up techniques – building melodies and rhythm out of snatches of sound – Herlop’s new material can at first seem chaotic. Listening feels like being dropped and caught repeatedly, but eventually this sensation becomes something more akin to floating. Originally more piano-based, her 2022 album ‘Pripyat’ saw her fully transition to becoming an electronic artist.

Alice Longyu Gao – Believe The Hype (feat Oli Sykes)
Chinese electro-pop artist Alice Longyu Gao has been fast gaining attention over the last year, helped by her bold collaboration with Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oli Sykes, ‘Believe The Hype’, taken from her recently released mini-album ‘Let’s Hope Heteros Fail, Learn And Retire’.

Mandy, Indiana – Pinking Sheers
‘Intense’ is definitely the word to describe experimental post-punk outfit Mandy, Indiana. Their debut album ‘I’ve Seen A Way’ is out next week, with four tracks already out and sounding great. We can wait to see them performed live.

Debby Friday – So Hard To Tell (pictured)
With an output that spans music, filmmaking, audio production, writing and spoken word, Debby Friday provides numerous rabbit holes to follow, but our main focus is her music which first captured us a couple of years ago. Her excellent debut album ‘Good Luck’ was released in March.

PVA – Hero Man
PVA’s 2022 debut album ‘Blush’ sees the band mix a variety of electronic genres into a dramatic sound that builds into something even more exciting on stage. Definitely a band to get your Saturday night onto the right footing.
