Playlist: The Joy Formidable

Having made a name for themselves on both sides of the Atlantic with blistering live performances and their self-released debut EP, ‘A Balloon Called Moaning’, The Joy Formidable released their debut album, ‘The Big Roar’, through the Warner/Atlantic-affiliated Canvasback Records in 2011.
Later this month, the band will release ‘Cholla’, the first single from their second album, before heading out on a tour of UK arenas as support act to Muse. As well as that, they’re fit in two headlines shows at Bangor’s Hendre Hall on 25 and London’s Kings College on 29 Oct. The new album, ‘Wolf’s Law’, is then due for release in January 2013.
Ahead of all of that, we asked the band to put together a playlist for us. Not only did they do this, but, explains frontwoman Ritzy Bryan, they also chose a theme to run through the whole thing: “This week we’ve been rehearsing in California, a state renowned for many things, amongst them wine, beaches and rollercoasters. We’ve been indulging in all three; so here’s a playlist for riding rollercoasters – metaphorically or otherwise – the violent ups and downs, and trepidation turning into euphoria. Here we go, don’t look down…”

Undoubtedly one of the best live bands we’ve ever toured with. This track is monstrous.
RC Stage 5 – Cue corkscrews: Daft Punk – Aerodynamite
Feet out of control. Anybody for krumping?
RC Stage 6 – Cue zero gravity roll: We Were Promised Jetpacks – Circles And Squares
Vivid, menacing, you can feel their roots, very real.
RC Stage 7 – Cue barrel rolls: Holy Fuck – Red Lights
Sexy and intriguing, one delicious bass line.
RC Stage 8 – Cue the last hammerhead turn: Lianne La Havas – Forget
Sassy and soulful, with a great spiralling chorus.
RC Stage 9: Queens Of The Stone Age – Sick, Sick, Sick
You remember the video, got to love a lady with an appetite.
RC Stage 10: Spiritualised – Do It All Over Again
From one of my all time favourite albums, orchestrally brilliant, evocative and moving – “You gotta hope for the best and the best looks great now baby”.
What a ride. Matt just threw up in his lap (again). Now to the Pirate Ship!
