Playlist: Visions Of Trees

Comprising vocalist Sara Atalar and electronics whizz Joni Juden, Visions Of Trees released their debut single ‘Sometimes It Kills’ to much praise, both in CMU and elsewhere, in January of last year. The follow-up, ‘Sirens’, did nothing to halt that trend, while a raft of remix work and live dates got their name out further.
The duo are due to release their eponymous debut album via Something In Construction on 11 Jun, before which they’ll release another single, ‘Turn 2U’, on 29 Apr. You can also catch them live at a trio of upcoming London dates, starting with The Waiting Room on 27 Apr, then the Old Blue Last on 11 May, and The Nest on 11 Jun.
Ahead of all of that, we asked them to put together a playlist for us. The ten tracks that came back, much to our delight, span from black metal to leftfield electronica. Here’s what they had to say about it: “This here is a little selection of songs we wanted to share with people. Some old stuff and a few recent discoveries, but they’ve all been a part of our journey as a band in the past twelve months or so. Our taste in music and influences are fairly eclectic and we wanted this playlist to reflect that. We went halves on the songs. Enjoy”.

01 Kingdom – Stalker Ha
Joni: Kingdom is one of my favourite new producers. His stuff has this coldness and bleakness to it that I love. Future horror garage.
02 Mayhem – De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Joni: I listen to a lot of black metal, guess it’s embedded in my Scandinavian roots or something. This is such a classic track from an era when the dudes in all these bands used to burn down churches and carry dead crows around in carrier bags.
03 Dero – Dero’s Rave
Joni: Just stumbled across this recently, it’s by this Argentinean guy who has been around for years apparently. I don’t actually listen to that much dance music, but sometimes you hear a track that just makes you wanna ring your dealer, and this is one of those tracks for sure.
04 Liturgy – Pagan Dawn
Joni: New transcendence-inducing black metal from Brooklyn. Their front man Hunter Hunt-Hendrix is insanely philosophical about his art and you can hear it in his music too. It’s raw and honest sounding and beautiful in a very brutal way.
05 Yamantaka // Sonic Titan – Queens
Joni: One of the dopest tracks I heard last year and still amazing. Such an underrated band. A perfect mixture of Buddhism, Chinese opera and sludgy rock riffs.
06 Björk – Unravel
Sara: This song is beauty. Messed up hopeful beauty from a record that teeters on ultimate chaos.
07 Azari & III – Reckless (With Your Love)
Sara: Played with these guys last year. Insaaain vocals. And basically an excuse to behave like a complete diva.
08 The Knife – You Take My Breath Away
Sara: This track was on a mixtape made for me in my teens and they’ve remained a band steeped in those heady memories of youthful discovery and broken hearts. Theirs is the love affair I’m still involved in. A band we have both learned a lot from.
09 Crystal Castles – Baptism
Sara: At Glastonbury 2011 our stage basically blew up mid-set. We were beyond pissed. But then… rain, pulsing lights and the taste of bitter euphoria. Festival perfection.
10 Nina Simone – Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood
Sara: A song that rings true to the last lyric. How’d you make the worst of you sound so beautiful?
