Single Review: Poppy & The Jezebels – Rhubard And Custard (Mute Irregular)

Poppy And The Jezebels

With an exceedingly sweet name and very pretty faces, this all girl band spoil us with a sugary musical delight combined with a sinister nursery rhymes chanted in the playground by the playground cute kids. Poppy & The Jezebels are not too dissimilar from new wave punks like the Waitresses, but have a shades of pop more reminiscent of likes of the Spice Girls amidst their off-key vocals. Simple guitars and a childish bent give the band a diverse sound which must surely prove popular with the female teen audience, though it might not be quite such a success with the adolescent boys. This is a syrupy confection is seemingly eminently suitable for those younger audiences, but may seem somewhat flavourless to the older listener who favours a bit of tart. CG
