Lil Wayne

Rounding up the latest release news…

Last week, Lil Wayne scattered a new single – titled ‘D’usse’, like the cognac Jay-Z thinks is “the shit” – from what’s possibly (or possibly not) his final solo LP, ‘Tha Carter V’.

The track, which is mixed and mastered by Lee Majors, if that means anything, follows lead ‘ Tha Carter V’ song, the Drake-featuring ‘Believe Me’. Stream it ahead of the LP’s still-TBA release here…

Elsewhere, Anna Calvi has collaborated with one David Byrne on a fairly daring new EP. Daring because it finds Calvi tackling a wild bunch of tracks originally done by the likes of FKA Twigs, Suicide, Conan Mockasin and David Bowie.

Byrne, who features on Calvi’s take on Mockasin’s ‘I’m The Man, That Will Find You’, and the EP’s title track, her version of Keren Ann’s ‘Strange Weather’, says this of that: “I’m a big fan of Anna’s two records and I caught her tour after her first record at Bowery Ballroom here in NY. ‘Epic’ I think is the word that is often used. I was invited to suggest songs and I loved the last Keren Ann record and I thought ‘Strange Weather’ had a haunting quality that might suit Anna…. so we did that, and Anna then suggested I join in on the Connan Mockasin track she’d done too”.

In advance of the EP’s release on 14 Jun, there’s plenty of time to get familiar with this spin on FKA Twigs’ ‘Papi Pacify’, which has Nico Muhly playing ‘the strings’ on it…

Straight from the heart of the nouveau wave of France’s electronica times past, this next bit of news relates to synth great Jean Michel Jarre, and the fact that Sony Music is to re-release six remastered edits of his many LPs. Having acquired the rights to Jarre’s discog, the six still-to-be-specified records will go on iTunes first, and have a physical release on 26 May. A TBA brand new LP by JMJ, his first in seven years, is arriving some time in 2015. Tres vague, soz.

Glittery pop weirdos JJ (who are big kids now, and so write their alias in capitals) have confirmed a new LP titled ‘V’. Following 2011’s ‘Kills’, and out on 19 Aug via Secretly Canadian/Sincerely Yours, the new album so far has only a ‘written motif’, and a trailer, to its name. So tap into both now, in that order.

At last we meet again
and I’m like baby, what you doing here?
You stay on my mind.
We been up all winters for someone like you and we know that you been up all winters for someone like us.
We don’t even know your name or where you came from
and someday this war will be over so we and our friends will stay together until the end.
Making our way through this motherfucking life.
Come on, we have to do it.
