Ringo not impressed with Vatican’s latest Beatles big up

It’s wasn’t the first time in recent years that the Vatican’s official newspaper had been complimentary towards The Beatles, despite the Catholic church being very down on the Fab Four back in the day, not least because of Lennon’s famous “we’re bigger than Jesus” remark.

But apparently last week’s article in L’Osservatore Romano, which basically absolved Lennon et al for their rock star decadence, high profile drug use and even that “bigger than Jesus” remark, was formally sanctioned by Pope Benedict XVI, who’s possibly aware his church needs all the friends it can get at the moment.

The latest pro-Beatles article in the Catholic newspaper remarked: “The Beatles said they were bigger than Jesus and put out mysterious messages, that were possibly even Satanic… [but] what would pop music be like without the Beatles?”

Alas, the article has failed to win the friendship of a certain Ring Starr, who doesn’t seem especially impressed by the Vatican’s latest remarks. He told reporters this week: “Didn’t the Vatican say we were Satanic or possibly Satanic? And they’ve still forgiven us? I think the Vatican, they’ve got more to talk about than the Beatles”. I think that’s basically “Ringo says fuck off”.

I don’t know whether the Vatican’s latest remarks mean that Lennon has now been given a ticket upwards from hell to heaven, though I did hear somewhere that above us was only clouds. Well, clouds and volcanic ash.
