Single Review: Roses Kings Castles – Horses (The Sycamore Club)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 8 December 2008
‘Horses’ is the third single from Babyshambles’ Adam Ficek’s solo project Roses Kings Castles, and has been released with one forthcoming holiday in mind: Christmas. Textured with the sparkling sound of sleigh bells and a multitude of instruments that Adam all plays himself, ‘Horses’ has a very Jam-esque feel to it (in fact, the first ten seconds is a dead ringer for ‘Town Called Malice’). Constant and soft throughout, the song plays a bit like a big woolly jumper would if it could sing – it never really escalates past its initial gentleness of tinkling tambourines, harmonicas, pianos and acoustic guitars; it is perhaps just a little too comfortable. ‘Fairytale Of New York’ it isn’t, ‘Horses’ simply lacks the memorable quality of the classic Christmas tune.
