A second person has died from injuries sustained during the crowd crush at an Asake concert at the Brixton Academy last week.

Gaby Hutchinson was working as a security contractor at the show, the third of three sell out performances at the venue by the afrobeats artist. According to reports, as a crowd built up outside the Academy on Thursday evening, some people without tickets tried to force their way into the venue, resulting in the crush.

Both Hutchinson and the other person who died as a result of the incident, Rebecca Ikumelo, were in the venue’s foyer at the time, police have confirmed, as was a third injured concert-goer who remains in a critical condition.

Confirming Hutchinson’s death, Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove told reporters: “It is devastating news that a second person has lost their life following the events on Thursday. I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to Gaby’s family at this unimaginably difficult time”.

In a new statement on Twitter, management at the Brixton Academy said: “Our heartfelt condolences are with Gaby Hutchinson’s family and friends. We continue to be devastated by this tragic situation and are fully supporting the ongoing investigation”.

The police investigation is ongoing into the circumstance that led to last week’s tragic events.
