Shaun Ryder, Paul Oakenfold, Goldie and Black Grape’s Kermit have formed a new group, Four Lions, to record a song for the England football team’s upcoming embarrassing defeat in the 2016 European Championships. Titled ‘We Are England’, it will be released this Friday.

“Hopefully our song will send out a positive vibe to the England fans and put a smile on their faces”, says Ryder. “We made this record for the real heroes of our country, the working men and women of England.

“We did two writing sessions at my house in the ‘man cave’, then two studio sessions in Manchester”, he says of the creation of the single. “Me and Kermit wrote the lyrics and Dan Broad, the Mondays and Black Grape’s musical director, engineered it. It was recorded all over the place – Oakey was in Los Angeles, Goldie was in Thailand and me and Kermit in Salford and Manchester. We had a few Guinnesses in the studio, so it’s a bit hazy, but we did film the studio time and the writing sessions”.

As well as seeing Ryder working with Kermit again, the single also reunites him with Paul Oakenfold, who produced The Happy Monday’s third album ‘Pill N Thrills And Bellyaches’.
