Single Review: Soap & Skin – Spiracle (PIAS)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 2 March 2009
Here is a Scout Niblett meets Björk voiced woman called Anja Plaschg. However, it is not just the voice which is impressive, as she comes out with similarly surreal and slightly insane lyrics as those two luminaries as well. We may have quite a talent on our hands. ‘Spiracle’ is a sparse song with doubled up vocal tracks (trying for John Cale’s old trick with Nico). At first the piano ballad is slightly uninspiring excursion into Regina Spektor territory, however Plaschg imbues the song with a degree of her own personality. The second track is a cut up interview, backed with a piano. It is quite a nice effect, but won’t have experimentalists sweating and confused. Overall, an intriguing prospect, I just hope that she is not chained to the piano, and is allowed to indulge the more idiosyncratic aspects of her talent. PG
