Sony Awards

The once doomed BBC Asian Network will compete with fellow BBC station 5 Live and Global Radio’s Classic FM for the overall station of the year prize at this year’s Sony Awards, the UK radio industry’s biggest annual back slapping fest.

In the long list of nominations announced yesterday, Radio 1 breakfast newcomer Nick Grimshaw picked up his first ever nomination, Absolute Radio’s Christian O’Connell secured three noms, and Radio 1 itself is shortlisted for its coverage of its own festival, the Hackney Weekend.

Commenting on this year’s contenders, John Myers, Chairman of the award’s organising committee, told reporters: “In 2012 radio proved that it’s an audio visual medium, as it conjured vivid pictures from its stunning coverage of those once-in-a-lifetime events. This year’s nominations make me proud to be part of the UK radio industry; the sheer range of talent across stations of all shapes and sizes is inspiring. I’m particularly delighted to see many new faces appearing amongst the nominations as these will ensure the continued vibrancy of an industry we are all so passionate about”.
