London’s Southbank Centre has announced a partnership with Live Beacon to install its iBeacon technology around the site’s various venues. The beacons will allow users to access various location-specific content through an app for smartphones and tablets. The deal sees the Southbank Centre become the first UK organisation to use the technology to enhance the visitor experience.

Southbank Centre Director Of Marketing And Communications Chris Denton said in a statement: “We are delighted to be working with Live Beacon to deliver a new way for our many visitors to engage with the vibrant and diverse programme of events at Southbank Centre. We will use the technology not only to help deliver basic information but also as an extension of ways to interact with events happening across the site”.

Live Beacon CEO Gordon Robson added: “It is fantastic to be launching Live Beacon with Southbank Centre. Our simple approach to beacons is leading the way in this emerging technology. Southbank Centre visitors need only download the free Live Beacon app for exciting content, useful information and exclusive offers to appear ‘like magic’ on their smartphones and tablets”.

The first use of the beacon technology will be as part of the Being A Man festival at the Royal Festival Hall this weekend, kicking off today. Eventually over 100 individual beacons will be placed around the entire 21 acre site.
