Q&A: Mondkopf

Mondkopf

Mondkopf is an electronic producer and remixer hailing from Toulouse, France. Taking inspiration from Brian Eno and Vangelis, his sound has been compared to the likes of Apparat, Modeselektor and Kevin Shields. Some will be familiar with Mondkopf’s name because of his association with the highly influential blog and label Fluokids, or from his remixing work with the likes of The Golden Filter, The Teenagers and even Johnny Cash. With his debut album ‘Galaxy Of Nowhere’ released earlier this year and a new EP, ‘Deaf House’, which moves in a darker direction, released this week via Asphalt Duchess, we got Mondkopf to answer our Same Six.

Q1 How did you start out making music?
With this shitty Ejay dance software trying to make hip hop with trance samples. I think my music is still a result of that failed attempt.

Q2 What inspired your latest album?

It is a collection of songs I had made over a long period of time, that I reworked to make sense as a whole album. I felt the record needed to have this feeling of a journey, because these are the kind of albums I like to listen to, albums that function as a whole. At some point this idea of a “galaxy of nowhere” emerged, to define this feeling of separation you can experience as a teenager, this kind of mental bubble you might like to keep yourself in.

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?

I guess I’m just fooling around with the possibilities, like any electronic producer, and things happen almost on their own. Melodies are always a key point in the growth of a track, though.

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
Brian Eno, Clark, Tim Hecker, Slowdive, Sunn O))), J Dilla, Aphex Twin, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Electric Wizard, Autechre, Modeselektor… and on and on…

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
To let themselves go.

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?
I have no ambitions, I just wish to be able to keep on doing this.
