The Big Reunion

Now Bestival is done (without me, I’m sorry about that, not my fault, they cocked up royally), the curtain on summer closes and leaves me looking both backward, wistfully, and forward hopefully.

The sign of a good summer, for me, is how Glastonbury goes, it sets the tone, weather-wise and otherwise for the all too brief festival-packed weeks ahead. It was, I think, the best one yet. Now that it’s a fading memory I find myself getting over the depression of the darkening days, and having to switch the heating on for the first time in months, by looking forward to some of the cool things coming our way.

Losers have a drummer now, who adds both ovaries and another six feet or more of height to the already lofty duo of myself and Tom Bellamy. Looking forward immensely to rehearsals and subsequent gigs. Our first single has been put back until January, because the amazing animated video featuring the artwork of the incredible Dan Hillier is taking so long to make. Unfortunately, animations tend to take an age but I know it’ll be worth it. We’ve got mixes in from South Central, Dan Le Sac, Skism, Sukh Knight, Zero B, and Tom Maddicott, so we will be doing some targeted giveaways in the run up to release. The album, ‘Beautiful Losers’ will be released shortly afterwards. Looks like February.

The Remix takes an expanded role in The Big Reunion at Butlins Skegness in November and December, hosting a stage that will see live performances by Calvin Harris, Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Stryder, as well as DJ talent from Utah Saints to Mary Anne Hobbs and a great support bill of bands like Ou Est Le Swimming Pool and Black Peter. Losers will be playing live too.

Nothing will take the edge off the clocks going back like the promise of a snowboarding trip. Having discovered this amazing sport rather late in life and fallen head over heels in love with it, I have now vowed never to let a year go by without a trip up to the mountains. So I am delighted to tell you that I’ve been asked to help host a new boutique snowboarding festival in Andorra come March. The formula will be much the same as Snowside Festival, which sadly never came to fruition as the backers got cold feet as the credit crunch really took hold. No danger of that happening this time as the biggest tour operator in the UK are behind this one, so we’ll get to have that gluewine-fuelled meet and greet in the snow after all. And I’ve never been to Andorra so I’m doubly excited about this one. I believe that Andorra is its own principality; there are no taxes on alcohol, so cheap booze on a snowboarding holiday, which is unheard of!

And right now? I stave off clocks-go-back-blues with trips to forests. Epping is my nearest and it’s magnificent at this time of year. Autumn is the forest’s crowning glory, best time of the year by a mile. I’ve found wild oyster mushrooms there before now.

My soundtrack is likely to be Sub Focus’ classy debut album, DJ Fresh’s sturdy and stylish sophomore effort, 80kidz excellent debut, plus incoming Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, Tommy Sparks and Grum. South Central’s album can’t be far away either. I hear Delays new record is their best yet. And I must get Alice In Chains new LP too – their single kicks arse.

And while this beautiful music plays, I’ll be cooking. You know I LOVE my food, and Autumn is the time for eating. I look forward to long cooked stews until springtime. Persian Fesenjan, Polish Bigos, Mexican Chile-Mole and French Coq Au Vin or Boeuf Bourguignon with my not-so-secret ingredient of dark chocolate at the end. Mmm, maybe it’s not going to be so bad after all.
