Virgin Records is to celebrate its 40th anniversary, and new status as a Universal-owned label, with a series of events and releases this year.

Commenting on the milestone, founder Richard Branson told CMU: “Virgin Records is where it all started for Virgin and 40 years later it’s great to see we are still being innovative. This exciting series of events is the perfect way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Virgin Records and the artists, from Mike Oldfield to Emeli Sandé, who continue to disrupt the status quo”.

That’s right, the man who once signed The Sex Pistols is holding Emeli Sandé up as an example of a rule breaker.

Anyway, the celebrations. There will be a special exhibition of photos, videos and memorabilia held in London later this year. There will also be a book, written by music journalist Adrian Thrills, a documentary directed by Paul Tilzey, and, of course, a compilation. The label will also hold a series of live events at Koko in Camden in October.
