Single Review: The Alps – Obstacle Race (Elusive Music)

An extremely dreary effort from a band with an equally dreary name. This song has elements in it that give it potential, both to be good, and to be a hit. The vocals and echo guitar, for example, make for Billy Bragg comparisons. But the song lacks Bragg’s intelligent and valuable lyrics, which are replaced with throwaway depressive words which mean absolutely nothing to me. The vocals trudge along in a sub-Snow Patrol vein, with no real memorable melody. To be honest, ‘Obstacle Race’ reminds me of boredom; and as I look at the CD sleeve in front of me all I can think about is being sat in a room with nothing to do but look at the alps through a window. True, that might appeal to some, but it isn’t my cup of tea.. CG
