Album Review: The Bishops – For Now (W2 Records)

Sadly not Harold from Neighbours finally unleashing his masterful tuba skills on a wonderfully welcoming world, The Bishops are instead three of your usual indie sorts from London, now on their second album since their 2002 formation. Don’t worry, it’s not all disappointment though, for twin brothers, Mike and Pete Bishop, as well as their trusty drummer, Chris McConville, have created a set of songs that rarely outstay their welcome. From the outset, this turns out to be an LP packed with the oomph of Kaiser Chiefs’ debut but with added integrity. ‘City Lights’ easily stands out as a lead single, though there’s plenty here to satisfy anyone longing for leather clad indie-pop. At least until Carl Barat forms another band. By the end of the 14 track running list, however, your mind may begin to wander as you register the lack of variation and clearly limited influences acknowledged along the way. Three men can only do so much, and trying to emulate the most successful bands of the last five years shouldn’t be top of that list of things to do. Fun for a while, but ultimately, one to lump in with The Rakes, The Rifles, The Others, The Tunics etc. TM
