Single Review: The Japanese Popstars – We Just Are (Gung-Ho Recordings)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 15 June 2009
Derry-based electro-house trio The Japanese Popstars have only been on the scene for about a year, but already they have released a slew of singles, popular remixes, a debut album, and have toured the country high and low with regular sell-out shows. Following all of this up with ‘We Just Are’, a single that has been described as chill-out infused but with their own trademark edge, The Japanese Popstars look ready to appease the summer crowds that are flocking in their thousands to the tons of fests the band are playing this year. They’re right – ‘We Just Are’ is extremely chill, with its lilting beat and wave-like synths. But it doesn’t really progress a lot from there. If it’s uber-relaxed background trance that you’re after, then this is your song for the summer. If not, like me, you may fail to see what the fuss is all about. Cool and soothing for one listen – any more and it gets a little tiresome. TW
