City Of London Police

This month’s most-read top ten is bookended by reports relating to the stern letters sent out by the City Of London Police’s new IP Crime Unit to domain registrars, advising them to shut down the domains of various file-sharing websites. Some complied with the order, though one registrar, easyDNS, questioned the authority of the unit to make such requests without a court order and refused.

There were more copyright legalities in the form of the latest update from the world of YouTube-mp3, a site that allows users to rip the audio of YouTube videos to MP3. The site defended its right to offer such a service, using the old ‘but it has legitimate uses’ routine, but the German record industry was actually suing on the grounds that the site was also caching and redistributing files, which is straight up copyright infringement. Needless to say, that didn’t go very well for the website.

But, hey, who needs illegal music services to offer additional functionality to existing websites when there are so many great legitimate options out there? Like the BBC’s Playlister, which enables users to tag songs they first experience through BBC programmes, creating playlists which can then be exported into Spotify, Deezer or YouTube for future listening. It certainly got a lot of interest from CMU readers, anyway.

Elsewhere in the interest stakes, there was news of a new child abuse claim against Michael Jackson getting a court date, The Who’s Roger Daltrey winning an outstanding contribution award, Snoop Dogg trying to rekindle his relationship with Welsh farmer Ian Neale, Ane Brun’s new rarities compilation (about which she chatted to CMU), the still-to-definitely-happen Susan Boyle biopic, and (now former) ‘X-Factor’ boyband Kingland being forced to change their name.

In CMU features this month, most popular were an Editor’s Letter column from CMU Editor Andy Malt looking at Miley Cyrus’s reaction to Sinead O’Connor’s open letter to the former Disney star, an interview with one of Japan’s biggest pop groups Perfume, an Approved column on Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip’s ‘Gold Teeth’ and another on a mix of movie music put together by Cillian Murphy for 6music, and finally HMV’s recent beef with Apple over its download app.
