The ten most-read news stories on the CMU site in July 2014

Sister Ray Records

After many years of reporting on record shops closing down, it’s been nice this year to run several news stories on new shops opening. And it seems other people feel the same, with the most popular story on the CMU website in July being the news that Soho shop Sister Ray was opening a new branch in Shoreditch’s Ace Hotel.

Music publishing was the real hot topic of the month though, with that side of the industry appearing in half of the top ten articles on the site. The ongoing debate over, and now US government investigation into, the management of digital performance rights in the States was particularly prominent. As was the collapse of the Global Repertoire Database, which was supposed to make multi-territory licensing much easier for publisher and licencees alike.

In CMU features this month, an Approved column featuring Ryn Weaver’s ‘OctaHate’ by far outstripped everything else. After that came Beef Of The Week columns on Robin Thicke and Garth Brooks, plus two more Approved pieces on The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Bug.
