Album Review: The Uglysuit – The Uglysuit (Touch & Go Records)

“I slipped further unconsciously into a world of windy dreams… / And where did I begin to drift off to that I think that I can fly / My mind – I took it to Chicago”. Ah, Chicago. The destination of choice for contemporary indie gentleman wishing to wax poetic – Sufjan Stevens, Spoon, Ryan Adams, and now Oklahoma City-based sextet The Uglysuit. Like a ‘Heatmiser’-era Elliot Smith or perhaps a mellow-sounding Rooney with grown-up lyrics, The Uglysuit’s debut eponymous album is a mix of sad-to-happy melodies and hopeful, retrospective lyrics. The nine-track LP clocks in at just over forty minutes long, but what a sweet and meditative forty minutes that is. Tying together guitars, pianos, keyboards and small, subtle orchestral components, the band create comforting sounds that are made for reflective rainy days. ‘The Anthem Of The Arctic Birds’ is the album’s highlight and perfectly sums up the record as a whole; it starts off beautifully with layered, lush vocals, before evolving into a punchy keyboard melody, tapering off again, eventually finishing on an opulent and well-textured tier of notes. A great, spellbinding and well-rounded debut from a band who are certainly destined for bigger things. TW
