Single Review: The Woe Betides – Play Dead (Songs In The Dark)

The Woe Betides

With a gestation period spent as curators of yet another London night of music, comedy, poetry and art (don’t other cities need these things too?), The Woe Betides are a pleasingly inspired duo, who gladly forsake the pretension of many in their previous work for the sake of blitzing folk grunge. The biggest strength found on these four debut songs is their naturalness. These voices were made for those guitars, those melodies and those handclaps. Certainly, ‘Boredom Is The Killer’ would only work in the circumstances given to it by Grundy le Zimbra and The Late Simon Mastrantone, the imaginatively entitled partners in this outlet for creativity. They make it superb, and though the rest of the EP sees gradual steps down the inspiration stairwell, woe betide anyone who doesn’t play dead. TM
