The BBC has engaged The xx to appear in concert as part of its Philharmonic Presents programme, a free festival staged at a number of northern English venues in September. The band will collaborate with film composer Alex Baranowski and the BBC Philharmonic to re-arrange tracks from their forthcoming LP ‘Coexist’, also premiering brand new orchestral material. If you don’t happen to live in the North, don’t fret, because it’s all being broadcast across various BBC radio stations.

Richard Hawley will also host his own evening of symphonic sounds, playing a “personal selection” of his catalogue with a full orchestra for the first time. Other events include a Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo-compered night of James Bond themes featuring Robert Ziegler and singer Ren Harvieu, and live tributes to the music of Miles Davies and Pakistani icon Noor Jehan.

Bearing in mind that last year’s festival featured a daring ‘dubstep symphony’ by DJ Nero, you can view the event’s comparatively safe 2012 listings here.
