These New Puritans confirm Field Of Reeds installation, ‘cannibalised’ EP
By Aly Barchi | Published on Friday 21 March 2014
Alto-pop braniacs These New Puritans will show off their ‘Magnetic Resonator Piano’, which featured on the band’s 2013 LP ‘Field Of Reeds’, via a free-entry exhibition at The Vinyl Factory in London.
For the uninitiated, the MRP is an “electronically-augmented” contraption that, if installed in a grand piano, is capable (via its in-built magnets) of altering and manipulating the strings to sustain notes and create new sounds, pitch bends and crescendos, etc. It will be on display at the Vinyl Factory’s LDN HQ at 180 Strand from 15-21 Apr, with motion sensors wired-in, which will allow visitors to play around with it.
In addition to working on the installation, TNP’s Jack Banett and post-rock icons Bark Psychosis have ‘cannibalised’ the original ‘Field Of Reeds’ LP, splicing in outtakes and bits of field recordings to create a two-track remix EP titled ‘Magnetic Field’. Limited to 500 signed copies, it’s available to order in advance now via The Vinyl Factory’s online shop.
Fans can also catch TNP and the MRP in action, as one, at an ‘Expanded’ show at London’s Barbican on 17 Apr, though sadly that’s sold out.
