Album Review: Various Artists – Soma Compilation 2008 (Soma Recordings)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 5 January 2009
Soma’s 2008 compilation provides more chilled out loveliness from the finest purveyors of the Scottish electronic dance scene; following in the footsteps of its predecessors, Soma’s 2008 compilation is packed with big room bass and deep harmonics. With tempered restraint, the twelve song mix offers a fine display of talent at the Soma label, perfectly balancing a unique blend of melodic intrigue and energetic house grooves. Adam Bayer is first up, remixing Slam’s ‘Staccato Rave’ in a truly distinct fashion, opting to keep the pace of the original but build upon a groove based platform instead, and turn into something exciting and inventive through the use of digital effects. Orlando Voorn’s mix of ‘The Journeyman’ is equally ambitious; whereas the original Octogen version is chilled in its own reflective mastery, Voorn creates something quite monstrous out of it. It becomes a dance floor killer with the added weight coming from a much stronger low-end presence. Low-end is also added to Mark Broom’s mix of ‘Girls Don’t Like Me’ by Portland based producer Let’s Go Outside. It grooves restlessly with some funky edits and interesting cuts. Credit where credit’s due, the compilers have really done an excellent job as the CD reaches its climax; Harvey McKay’s ’69’, a sombre and haunting track backs on to the upbeat slayer that is Silicone Soul’s ‘The Pact’, which powers the compilation to its close. It makes for thrilling listening and is truly the mark of a quality compilation. SJS
